Idli is the special delicacy of South Indian Cuisine, which is made with the combination of rice and dal. It is one of the most easiest and tastiest dish which can be served either at the time of breakfast or at any time you want to enjoy the evening snacks.

It is the classic, traditional dish of South Indian Households, but truly is famous in all over India. Idli’s are mostly served with sambar and coconut chutney, but kids mostly like to have only Idli.

Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 15 minutes
Serving: 16 Idli’s

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups rice
  • 1 cup urad dal (whole skinned black lentils)
  • A pinch of baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • Salt to taste

How to make South Indian Idli:

  1. Wash the rice and dal separately and then soak them individually for about 10-12 hours or overnight.
  2. Next morning blend or grind them separately until coarsely grounded.
  3. While grinding you need to add little amount of water to make a thick batter.Idli batter
  4. You will observe the batter doubles up in the volume while grinding.
  5. Remove out in a large bowl, now you can combine the batter of rice and dal.
  6. Add salt and baking soda. Mix well and keep aside.
  7. Now lets do the preparation for plates of Idli maker or the Idli steamer or Idli Pressure cooker.
  8. Apply little bit of oil on each and every plate of idli steamer.
  9. Fill the steamer with the required amount of water underneath.
  10. Pour the batter with the spatula in each plate to make the equal size idli’s.Soft and fluffy Idli Recipe

  13. First cook on high flame for about 10 minutes and then simmer the gas and cook for 5 more minutes.
  14. Check the softness with the fork, whether they are done or you need to keep them for more time.Soft and fluffy Idli Recipe
  15. When the Idli’s gets ready, Take out the plates from the steamer and leave to rest for 2-3 minutes.Soft and fluffy Idli Recipe
  16. Serve the soft and fluffy idli’s with medu vada, coconut chutney and sambar to make a complete meal.idli-vada-sambar-chutney

Chef Tips:

  1. Be careful while filling the bottom of steamer with the water, If you will add more water then the last plate of idli’s will become soggy, or if you will fill less water then it will burn the bottom of the steamer. So add water accordingly.
  2. Kid’s likes to have these idli’s with the tomato sauce or ketchup.
