Dal Fry Recipe is one of the most famous cuisine in Punjabi Menu. It is served in almost all the restaurants and Dhaba’s around India. In this recipe Yellow Moong Dal (Yellow Split Lentils) is first boiled and then cooked in onion, tomato and spices.

Yellow Moon Dal (Yellow Split Lentils) is very rich in protein (almost 1/4 is protein) and contains almost no fats hence it is very healthy recipe, provided you cook it in less oil or fat free oil.  Dal Fry is very Famous Recipe in Wedding Receptions and other festival menus.

Dal Fry is usually eaten with Rice but it also taste good with Roti or Bread. Dal Fry Recipe is very fast cooking and easy recipe. Dal Fry and Tandoori Roti is a staple food in Punjab and Haryana and typically served in most of the road side Dhabas. Many people make this dal with mixed Indian Dals (Lentils), such as toor, chana, moong, masoor dal or just with chana and toor dal. Mixing different kind of Dal’s will give your Dal recipe little different taste.

Soak Dal in water for about 10 minutes
Wash Yellow Moong Dal (Yellow Split Lentils) 2-3 times
Pressure Cook Dal by adding red chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, whole pods of garlic and salt to taste
Put Yellow Moong Dal in Pressure cooker and add Garlic Cloves, Salt, Turmeric  Powder (haldi), Coriander Powder and boil it for 8 minutes. Make sure the water level is just above the Dal. CAUTION: Don’t leave pressure cooker without attention because water may come out from pressure cooker vessel and may fall on stove top resulting in shutting down of flames

Chop onion, tomato, ginger, garlic, green chillies and coriander leaves finely. Also make some ginger julienne

In heating oil add cumin seeds. When the seeds starts spluttering then add chopped onion along with green chillies. Cook over low flame and add chopped tomatoes

Now add mashed dal, red chilli powder, turmeric powder and kasuri methi

Add some water to get a desired consistency of dal and mix well. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup yellow moong dal
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tomato, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger, julienne
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, finely chopped
  • 4 pieces of garlic cloves
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Kasturi Methi (Fenugreek leaves)
  • 2 tablespoon fresh coriander leaves, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoon cooking oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash yellow moong dal 2-3 times in running water. Drain the water from dal and put the dal in pressure cooker. Add 2 cups water in pressure cooker. Make sure water is just above the dal. Now add garlic cloves, salt, turmeric powder, coriander powder and pressure cook it for about 7 to 8 minutes. Leave pressure cooker lid closed till all the pressure is gone. Once you open the lid add some water and blend dal till it becomes medium smooth. Finely chop onion, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, green chilies and coriander leaves.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. Let them cook for 15-20 seconds. When seeds begin to crackle, add chopped onion and green chilies and stir fry till onion is slightly cooked. Now add tomatoes, chopped garlic Ginger Julian and little salt to taste. Cook it for 2-3 minutes till onion turns pink.
  3. Now add dal, red chili powder, turmeric powder, water, Kasturi Methi, Coriander leaves and cook them well for 4-5 minutes. Your Dal Fry is now ready.

Notes

It is important that you do not overcook onion otherwise it will spoil taste of dal. Make sure you cook the dal for 4-5 minutes after adding water in it so that tomato's get properly cooked.

    • Hi Reenie, no you don’t have to fry dal before washing because we are boiling it here. I have made this recipe 100’s of time, it taste good as i have described.
