Masala Dal

Masala Dal is the spicy and exotic flavored dal that consists several mixed spices and pampered with red chilli flakes. This is one of the most delicious dals that can easily goes with roti or naan.

Cooking time: 15 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup yellow moong dal
  • 1/2 cup masoor dal (split red lentils)
  • Few curry leaves
  • 1 Kashmiri red chilli
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 3/4 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 medium size onion roughly chopped
  • 3-4 green chillies
  • 1 inch ginger
  • 1/2 tbsp white sesame seeds
  • 2 tomatoes roughly chopped
  • 2 tbsp coconut grated or thinly chopped
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2-3 black peppercorns
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli flakes
  • 1-1/2 tbsp oil
  • 2 tbsp fresh cilantro chopped
  • Salt to taste

How to make Masala Dal:

  1. Wash both the dals, mix and soak into water for about 20-25 minutes.
  2. Put the onion, coconut, green chillies, sesame seeds and ginger into the grinder and grind until becomes a smooth paste. Keep aside.
  3. Pressure cook the soaked dals by adding little bit of salt, red chilli powder and turmeric powder.
  4. Add good amount of water to make the soft dal.
  5. Heat the oil in a pan and add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, Kashmiri red chilli and curry leaves.
  6. Saute for few seconds and add coconut-onion paste.
  7. Stir constantly to avoid the burning and cook until little cooked.
  8. Add dal, chopped tomatoes and spices.
  9. Mix thoroughly and keep on medium high flame.
  10. Add water to get a desired consistency and adjust with some salt.
  11. Cook for 5 more minutes and serve.

Chef Tips:

  1. Do not add more amount of water and make a thick masala dal, that can easily go with Indian roti.
  2. Sprinkle some chaat masala powder just before serving, Chaat masala enhances the flavor of masala dal.
