Sukhi Dal Recipe

Sukhi Dal is the Punjabi Special Sukhi (Dry) Chana Dal, cooked with onion and whole garam masala (spices).Sukhi Dal

  • 2 cups bengal gram flour (chana dal)
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 inch cinnamon (cut into bits)
  • 3 cloves
  • 1 large onion finely chopped
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 2 tsp ghee
  • 1/2 tsp lemon juice
  • Fresh coriander leaves chopped
  • Salt to taste

How to make Sukhi Dal (Dry Chana Dal) :

  1. Clean the dal thoroughly in normal running water.
  2. Wash and soak in water for about 30 minutes.
  3. Pressure cook the dal with 4 cups of water and keep aside.
  4. Melt the ghee in a pan and add whole garam spices (bay leaves, cloves, cinnamon and cumin seeds).
  5. Fry until they start to pop up.
  6. Add chopped onions and fry until onion translucent and turns brown.
  7. Add cooked dal, salt and spices.
  8. Leave the dal uncovered on gas to boil for few minutes.
  9. Garnish dal with chopped coriander leaves and stir in lemon juice.
  10. Serve hot with Indian chapati / roti, puri, paratha or butter naan.
